JOKER: FOLIE Á DEUX Dir: Todd Phillips ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Look. I’ve had some time to think about it. It’s not necessarily a swing and a miss.  It’s more a solid hit that doesn’t reach the boundary and then there is a miscommunication with the batsmen and you get run out at the crease. This is a cricket reference for those US folk and the batsmen/batman pun was entirely unintentional. Arthur Fleck aka Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) is in Arkham Asylum awaiting trial for the events of the first movie. His lawyer Catherine Keener seeks an insanity plea while inside he is treated mostly like a joke by the prison guards, with (sort of) kindly Brendon Gleason hooking him up a musical therapy class where he meets arsonist Lee (Lady Gaga) who inspires him to embrace his madness.  This smacks of a filmmaker who regrets that his original smash hit picture became a call-to-arms for incels, and sees him proceed to take a revisionist deconstructionist sledgehammer approach to the sequel. There is a definite air of atonement as we are greeted by trial witnesses from Arthur’s crimes, most obvious in the appearance from Gary Puddles (Leigh Gill) who outlines how even witnessing such horrific events can cause significant trauma.  Remember at the end of the first Matrix when Neo is like superman and is gonna basically tear shit up - but then the Matrix Reloaded rolls around and he is kinda sorta just the same? Prisoner Fleck has reverted to a similar stage.A sorry, depressed mess, Joker: Folie á Deux is an almost unofficial origin story redux, anticipating his build back to the city burning chaos we saw at the conclusion of the original. Except we never get back to that version of Joker, not even close. An interview with Steve Coogan and the court-house self representation (equal to French Father Christmas in Anatomy of a Fall and whatever the fuck Brendan Fraser was doing in Killers of the Flower Moon as recent examples of cinematic courtroom excellence) show us what the character could have been if given free range and provides us a tinge of hope, but it is mostly just sad mopey Phoenix, the occasional music number and other such flights of fantasy including a nice Jacques Demy coloured umbrella reference.  The violence quota is significantly reduced and what does exist is attached primarily to the aforementioned fantasy moments. The recasting of Gotham as NYC in the 80s is mostly missing here due to locations being limited to prison and/or courthouse walls.  Phoenix is brilliant but can’t sing for shit. Gaga has some mean pipes as we all already know. Her character is an interesting one, a kind of a Manson family devotee and representative of class divide and slacktivism. We privileged may feel solidarity with a cause, but ultimately Arthur will rot in a cell of inadequate treatment and Lee can return to her trust fund Daddy. Her character is in many ways an audience conduit who ultimately left disappointed when her desired outcome is not delivered, much in the way Phillips gives us the film we don’t want, but maybe it’s the film we need. I don’t know. I’m ambivalent.  I guess it is understandable, if Ill-advised, to shift from a wining formula due to the generation of undesirable elements in the audience - but this feels like an over correction to address just one portion of a much wider fan base.  Ain’t no one can accuse this of being fan service.
