AKI Victims’ Families Reject Government Compensation Claims Date: September 3, 2025 By: Arret Jatta Ebrima Sanyang, chairperson of the families of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) victims, has denied Justice Minister Dawda Jallow’s claim that the government offered compensation to the victims, which they allegedly rejected. Speaking to The Standard, Sanyang said he was unaware of any such offer. “I want the minister to tell the public where, when, and how that offer was made. As far as I know, we did not have a meeting or receive any offer,” he said. Sanyang explained that the families had met with a government taskforce and the National Assembly Select Committee, but discussions focused on recommendations and legal action, not compensation. A meeting with the Justice Minister after the release of the taskforce report only addressed suing the Indian pharmaceutical company that manufactured the drugs. He also mentioned that a court appearance suggested the possibility of an out-of-court settlement, but no government outreach followed. Sanyang thanked the public for supporting the AKI victims, stressing the case’s significance for all Gambians. “We want to make sure AKI victims get the justice they deserve because this concerns every Gambian,” he concluded.
