The lore is actually simple. Steve, Tony, Sonny, Terry and Teddy. Together they are an organisation of sorts. At some point during the story, Teddy's brother died. He was part of the organisation too. This tore Teddy apart, and it's the reason he doesn't wear a suit. He also looks at old VHS tapes that remind him of what once was. After Terry's kidnapped by the twins, Teddy dies in an attempt to save him. But Terry can see him. And Teddy can't leave, because Terry hasn't come to terms with his death. Done, that's the lore.
