Wait…. Just cuz you pay off the car doesn’t mean you don’t need insurance. You should still have full coverage even if the car is paid off

Flooded cars are an immediate write off. Can't tell the extent of damage, no way to say it's safe or that it's "fixed".

when cars have been in water they can hydrolock and arent usually fixable. salt water is even worse mate. use your insurance and make a claim.

As a saltwater boat mechanic, even if they got it running, you would always have continuous issues.

Pat :
The reason they are asking you about insurance is because most people can’t afford to pay the price the car is worth ($20k) to repair. Which is what it will cost to repair a salt water flooded car.

you CAN do that, but spending $24k to fix a $20k car is usually a nogo

I'm assuming he has liability insurance and not full coverage. meaning insurance won't pay for flood damage. if he had full coverage insurance they would.

If it’s a flooded car you’re better off to count your losses and buy something else, coming from a mechanic the car will never be right again

Radio Guy Ty :
There is no "fixing" flood damage. They would have to rebuild the entire car to ensure the flood damage was removed, and that's if the salt corrosion hasn't caused bigger problems.

As a dealer tech, the issue with flood cars is that it gets expensive quick. Harness get corroded, modules need replaced. Interior etc. it’s just not worth it, not to mention you may have electrical

with insurance they would total it. without insurance you're replacing everything under the hood. there's a diff between getting it to run vs healthy and anything short of replacement is a bandaid.

As a mechanic, flood damage cars are never right unless you replace all the electrical stuff. Modules grow the green fuzz, water wicks up the wire sheathing and it says there and grows green fuzz.

bro. if it was flooded, it's probably mechanically totalled. yeah you can take it to someone to fix it but it'll be close to if not more than it's value to fix it. modules and harnesses are not cheap. next time, keep the full coverage.

It’s totaled. The issue is the amount of electrical that goes into wiring the interior. Also, you have a lot of safety sensors under your seats.
