I’m very late but two things have stuck with me- 1. My third grade teacher always had skooby snacks in her desk for me so I didn’t miss out on snack time. She didn’t make a big deal, just quietly deposited it in my hand or on my desk every single day so I knew I could depend on the snack.

Dignity in the process. I hated because we were low income, my lunch tickets were a different color, or that gifted clothes at Christmas were never my size. And access to fresh produce.

but also, a fund for school fees. I missed out on a couple field trips because I didn't have the money

fact we were singled out! Free lunch=different ticket than others, free clothes= being pulled out of the class to get them and others saw. It was always so embarrassing when you wanted to just fit in

I ran the PTO for a few years. We paid for the kids that couldn't afford the trips. We did a Christmas store & had teachers tell us who needed money to shop so they were included without others

meals that's all I wanted, just a warm hearty meal at night. The nights are so long when you are hungry.

They would let me clean tables for a free lunch. There are programs but my mom was too stubborn to sign up for them

I grew up in poverty. I love what you’ve been doing. I also had issues with sports and what that entails. Fees at school being paid so I could play sports. Shoes, uniforms etc.

Have a basket for everyone who "forgot a healthy snack," or send home a bag of pre-made meals and snacks. All done discreetly to avoid any shame.

I would be bad if my parents ever knew. I needed to be able to eat as much food at school as I could consume. Nothing could come home.

The main thing is to not feel singled out. So a way to be able to receive food, hygiene items, etc. in a private way... Being singled out as the. *poor kid* is the worst.

Shared their lunch with me. So, it would have been nice if my childhood buddy had access to a grab bag lunch and they got it then shared it with me. Less embarrassing.

I'm that person....put together a cabinet of non perishable food...noodles ....soups... things that one can discreetly tuck in a backpack that would get them through on the weekend but decreet

I grew up having to go to the food pantry. We didn't get to pick out stuff we liked .It was whatever was left after standing in line. It was alot of canned stuff and not much to choose from.

Tbh we weren’t so low income we couldn’t eat, but we were low income we afford snacks. So snacks. Doesn’t even have to be fancy, but the ability to have a snack.

Being a single mom, my kids got free lunch growing up. They used a school ID number in the cafeteria. My oldest was hungry even having food at home. He would never say no to free food. We did struggle

weekend lunches/snacks would have been the most helpful for me. I lived in the country with nothing around.

so for me it is about universal design. I didnt want to be seen. if the snack is available for anyone and others take part then I could do so without drawing attention.
