Days 30 & 31: Portomarín ➡️ Palas de Rei ➡️ Arzúa Yesterday’s 26 km walk to Palas de Rei was… let’s just say, one for the books. There are no photos from the day because I was hungover as all hell and spent the entire walk just trying to survive. 🥴 Lesson learned: gin and pilgrim life don’t always mix well. But I made it — slowly, painfully, and with a newfound respect for hydration and early nights. Today’s 29 km trek to Arzúa, though, was a different story. I was up early, hitting the road by 7 am, determined to make some distance and find a bit of peace away from the larger crowds of new pilgrims. I made it about 5 km before my body staged a protest and I stopped for coffee, bacon and eggs, and some playtime with the local dog who joined me for breakfast. 🐕☕ The morning moved quickly, and by midday I reached the halfway point where I decided to try the local pulpo (octopus). Let’s just say… I’ve ticked that box and won’t be rushing back for seconds. 🐙😅 The second half of the day brought rain — steady and cold, the kind that seeps into your bones. It drained my energy at times, but I kept reminding myself: You can do this. It’s your third last day walking. That thought alone kept my feet moving forward. Somewhere in the afternoon, as I walked through a long stretch of forest in the rain, I caught a scent that stopped me in my tracks — eucalyptus. For kilometres, the air smelled like home. It made me ache a little, thinking of Australia, of my space, my things, my people, my cats. But it also reminded me to stay present — to savour these last few days out here before it all becomes a memory. Only 39 km to Santiago now. Hard to believe. My body’s tired, my feet are sore, but my heart feels full. 💛 #CaminoDeSantiago #FrenchWay #Day30 #Day31 #PalasDeRei
