But according to Katie Sanders, the Editor-in-chief of @politifact, that’s actually pretty normal — and lawful. “States have anywhere from a week to multiple weeks to finish counting their results and declare a winner. Then they can certify their results after that,” Sanders said. “Anything you see on election night is an unofficial result,” shared Sanders. This is important to keep in mind, in case a candidate announces victory prematurely-- as former President Donald Trump did in 2020, mere hours after polls had closed on election night. Sanders explains that different laws for counting mail-in-ballots, as well as really close margins are a couple of reasons why it might take some states a few days to count their results. "My advice: stay patient.
