Both campaigns spent a significant amount of time and money in the Keystone State, the battleground state with the most electoral votes (19). Trump won Pennsylvania in 2016 by 40,000 votes. Joe Biden, a native of Scranton, flipped the commonwealth back to the Democrats in 2020 by 80,000 votes. Because the U.S. does not have a nationwide body that collects and releases election results, many newsrooms – including PBS News – rely on The Associated Press on election night. The AP gathers and standardizes data from local and state election agencies to make it publicly available as quickly and accurately as possible. Using vote totals, AP VoteCast survey data, historic voting and registration patterns, journalists at the AP will declare a winner in more than 5,000 competitive races this year.
