Try 12 st to start. 2nd row inc in ea st. 3rd row inc in every other stitch. 4th row inc in every 2 st then in every stitch for the following rows.

I prefer doing top down beanies; I don't know if you care or want to try again but usually I do 12 st in 1st round, double that in 2nd, then increase every other st in 3rd row (36 st)
