If this movie ended after the first hour, it would have been one of the best modern slashers. High Tension (2003) is an extreme French horror movie from director Alexandre Aja. It starts with a bang (literally) and the first hour is an absolutely perfect slasher/home invasion horror movie. The scenes in this will stick with me for some time. It’s genuinely terrifying, brutal, and chilling. But then, it goes off the rails. The last 15-20 minutes introduce a twist ending that feels shoehorned in. The opening scene begins to make no sense with the twist. So many plot holes. It’s rough. I know what the movie is going for. It’s an interesting narrative structure and the twist makes sense in theory, but it doesn’t make sense in the context of the rest of the movie. If you want a great slasher movie, the first hour of High Tension is it. It’s excellent. And not too extreme, on par with something like Saw or Hostel. But I’ll be curious if the twist ending throws you off like it did for me. High Tension can be streamed (for free) on @Kanopy or you can pick up the excellent New Extremity Collection from @Umbrella for a deep dive into the French New Extremity movement!
