@mixartistry: The last passenger pigeon. In a quiet corner of a Cincinnati museum, a glass display case holds the lifeless form of a pigeon named *Martha*. On September 1, 1914, she passed away at the Cincinnati Zoo, the last of her kind—once part of vast flocks that could fill the sky. But in her final moments, *Martha* was alone, perched in her enclosure with no other of her species. And so ended her life, and with it, the extinction of the passenger pigeon. Passenger pigeons were once abundant across North America, with flocks so large they could cover miles of sky. At their peak, their population ranged between 3 and 5 billion, with colonies numbering in the millions. They were the most numerous bird species in the world. However, relentless hunting for food, sport, and commercial purposes, combined with widespread habitat destruction, led to their rapid decline. By the early 1900s, only a few remained, and *Martha* became the last of her species. #fyp #nature
