@pbsnews: Donald Trump has named Tom Homan as the “border czar” in his incoming administration, giving the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement charge over, among other responsibilities, “the southern border, the northern border, all maritime, and aviation security,” the president-elect wrote Monday. He will also “be in charge of all deportation of illegal aliens back to their country of origin,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. Over three decades in law enforcement, Homan worked as a police officer, Border Patrol agent and special agent with U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, an agency that preceded ICE. Before becoming acting director of ICE in January 2017, he led the agency’s efforts to detain and deport immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally. During that time, he received recognition from the federal government for his work to deport unauthorized immigrants. In a May 2018 interview with PBS News Hour’s Judy Woodruff, Homan called the Trump administration’s policy of separating families who arrived at the southern border illegally “unfortunate” and “sad." But he also noted logistical issues with keeping families together in those situations. "Children get separated from parents every day in this country when their parents are arrested for criminal violations. ...
