@pbsnews: Sen. John Thune of South Dakota will be the next majority leader when Republican take control of the chamber early next year. Thune won the job in a 29-24 vote of Senate Republicans held Wednesday. Thune, 63, will replace Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, 82, who is stepping down from the role after 18 years. McConnell was the longest-serving leader in Senate history. “I am extremely honored to have earned the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate in the 119th Congress, and I am beyond proud of the work we have done to secure our majority and the White House,” Thune said in a statement. “This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s agenda, and our work starts today.” Thune served as South Dakota's lone U.S. House member from 1997-2003. He defeated then-Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle in 2004 and has climbed the ladder of Republican leadership during his 20 years in the Senate. Ahead of the secret ballot election on Wednesday, he has been party whip, responsible for rounding up members for votes. #trump #donaldtrump #trumpnews #trumpappointee #trumpadministration #tomdaschle #senatemajorityleader #johnthune #mitchmcconnell #senate #pbsnews
