My stitches were raw and I had a newborn and toddler with me when this doctor said this to me. Thankfully I wasn’t intimidated. I said - “okay thank you for your perspective” and hightailed it out of there (and never looked back) Went on to have an unmedicated VBAC a few years later 💪🏼 I understand that the reason he wanted me to have an epidural is because if I had a uterine rupture, he would want to be able to perform a C-section quickly. But for me, I would rather be put under a general anesthesia for an emergency like that then have to have an epidural. Epidurals make me really sick and I simply just don’t like them. Not to mention that the risk of uterine rupture is very very low - less than 1%. I know I get a lot of flack on this platform from talking about how to advocate for yourself with your doctor. Well intentioned OBs simply cannot believe that other providers act like this with their patients. This happened to me and I hear conversations like this from my clients and students weekly. I’m a privileged, educated white woman and it was hard to advocate for my preferences. It’s gotta change y’all! I won’t stop talking about it 🤪
