TWO TYPES OF LIGHT [21:48] Honestly, the subtlety of the Qur’an is incredible. Many of us have heard that the revelation of Allah ﷻ is a light… But have you ever noticed which word He uses? Because the Qur’an doesn’t use one word for light — it uses two: Nūr (نُور) and Ḍiyāʾ (ضِيَاء). So what’s the difference? When describing Mūsā عليه السلام, Allah ﷻ says: وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ ٱلْفُرْقَانَ وَضِيَآءًۭ وَذِكْرًۭا لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ٤٨ “Indeed, We gave Mūsā and Hārūn the Furqān — a ḍiyāʾ (light) and a reminder for the mindful.” (21:48) But when He described the Prophet ﷺ, He said: لَقَدْ جَاءَكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ نُورٌۭ وَكِتَـٰبٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ “Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a nūr — a light — and a clear Book.” (5:15) The word ḍiyāʾ appears only three times in the entire Qur’an. And in the other two, the distinction between them is clarified: هُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ ضِيَآءًۭ وَٱلْقَمَرَ نُورًۭا “It is He who made the sun a ḍiyāʾ and the moon a nūr.” (Yūnus 10:5) Here, ḍiyāʾ is the light of the sun — a light born from struggle, self-combusting through intense heat to produce the light it gives. Nūr on the other hand is the light of the moon — soft, reflective, and serene. Gentle on the eye and beautiful to behold So when Allah ﷻ gave Mūsā عليه السلام a ḍiyāʾ, it came through trial — through Pharaoh’s tyranny, his people’s defiance, and a life of relentless struggle. Even the Prophet ﷺ said of his own trials, “May Allah have mercy on Mūsā — he was harmed with more than this, and he was patient.” (Bukhārī) His light was like the sun — purifying but fierce. Even his personality reflected the majesty of Allah ﷻ — confronting falsehood fiercely, head-on. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, on the other hand, was nūr — a light like the moon: gentle, soothing, full of mercy. And his ummah carried that same light — honouring his call and serving their Lord. As the Anṣār famously declared before Badr: “We will not say as the followers of Mūsā said, ‘Go you and your Lord and fight; we are sitting here.’ Rather, we will say — go forth and fight, we are with you.” This contrast between Nur and Diyaa appears in the hadith literature too. The Prophet ﷺ described: “The prayer is nūr, and patience is ḍiyāʾ.” (Muslim) Ṣalāh brings peace — a cool light of tranquility. Ṣabr (patience) brings light too — but through endurance and pain. It burns… before it brightens. That’s divine precision. Every light in your life has its source — some reflect mercy, others are forged in hardship. If your path feels fiery, you walk what Mūsā عليه السلام walked. If it feels calm, you follow the Muhammad ﷺ. Both are light. Both guide you home. And both… lead back to Allah ﷻ. #twoTypesOfLight #QuranReflection #DivineWisdom #NurAndDiyaa #LightOfTheQuran
