My parents couldn’t afford the lunch price so I had to eat bread and peanut butter (that the school provided) and then they lost some funding and then I couldn’t eat at all. That was 20 years ago.

In Canada, I live in a province with a fairly new “pay what you can” model lunch program. Just the last few years. It’s amazing. It’s anonymous to the school what families pay for the lunches and they can pay as little as $0 up to $6 a meal. The lunches are pretty good and well balanced. I am super proud of this program. Too many kids go without food at lunch time and this ensures every child is receiving at least 1 good meal a day for certain. Last summer they even ran a program where they offered families the lunches for the summer weeks and that program was 0$ and for any family that requested it.

As an Aussie I’ve never understood what seem to be mass produced unhealthy lunches? We have options for ordering from our local businesses each week but primarily we have always packed lunches..what sort of food options do they get?
