@astro7e: DART was a joint project between NASA and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. The project was funded through NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, managed by NASA's Planetary Missions Program, with the Italian Space Agency contributing with the LICIACube, a CubeSat which photographed the impact event 🛰️ #astro7e #Astronomy #astronomytok #space #spacetok #dartmission #nasadart #asteroid #asteroidimpact
In future news dimorphos collided with an unkown planet and wiped out the planets ecosystem and all life.

That’s fascinating, but judging by the “quality” of some of the comments here, I’m not entirely sure that humanity is worth saving

Once it gets big enough we can’t do anything, and never will be able to do anything

In canada, trudeau would just tax it; that is his fix for everything (but does absolutely nothing except make the country poor)

this was always theoretically an option which is why asteroid movies have always been a silly concept. it's like saying ur doomed bc of a cut on your finger. it COULD be bad but we have solutions

I give up :
We would likely detect an asteroid on a collision course years in advance. Even just a tiny tweak to its orbit with a strike like this would cause it to completely miss the earth.

I know transportation of explosives or even nuclear bombs out of the atmosphere is extremely dangerous, but would that work too for bigger asteroids?

Dimorphos is 500’ diameter, what do you do about a 10 mile one?

The fact it hit the bullseye is nuts. I’m glad we have some sort of defense from scary space rocks.

I don’t know too much about this stuff but would that exact same thing be able to change the course of a meteor with a 5km radius? Would the speed be enough to make a noticeable impact with the 600kg?

So did it change the trajectory enough that we would consider earth saved if its original trajectory was towards us?
