So they say that having ADHD is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it allows your mind to travel to the most beautiful places. You’re a natural problem solver, coming up with the most creative solutions. You recognize patterns and make connections others might miss; you feel like you have insight into life’s most existential questions. ADHD has birthed some of the world’s greatest innovators, inventors, and engineers.. and I owe my entire career to it from the way its helped me think about food and content creating. But with that gift to think — and think to an nth degree — comes its trade-offs.. Your mind can be very turbulent. It’s hard to make a decision without analyzing every alternative and mapping every outcome from every alternative (analysis paralysis). You crave novelty, always chasing the next challenge, idea, thrill. Contentment feels fleeting because the present moment feels dull compared to the possibilities your mind’s already created.. ..and that constant hyper-thinking can lead to dark places. It’s hard to accept passing thoughts and reality as is. Every idea has to be questioned, challenged, taken to its deepest depths — sometimes to the point of nihilism and existential doubt. “Nothing feels enough; everything is temporary; the universe is indifferent; thus, nothing matters.” But, just as ADHD can evoke dread, it can subsequently evoke meaning. That’s the paradox and the beauty of ADHD: just as it can make life feel meaningless, it can also help you find meaning in its meaninglessness. Life becomes a playground of endless possibilities to do anything you put your mind to with this profound gift. ADHD is so much more than our conventional perceptions of being hyper or easily distracted. It’s about thinking, often too much. The solution isn’t to fight against it but to work with it — to channel overthinking into creative expression, to embrace novelty to actualize our biggest dreams, and to reinforce life’s impermanence and undetermined meaning into an opportunity to live authentically, savor each moment, and embrace life as a perpetual journey of self-discovery.
