A great reference book is Christopher Bookers “7 basic plots” —not rules it’s observations/ study of structure. Learning this stuff helped me know how to be intentional about breaking rules

The way to explain this is through the audience’s expectations. Audiences have been conditioned to expect these beats at certain times. Failure to meet a minimum of those expectations means your movie simply isn’t going to work.
