🎭🎭 The Girl on The Train ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 stars) Venue: Storyhouse, Chester The Girl On The Train is the stage version of the 2015 book, written by Paula Hawkins. You may have also seen the 2016 film, starring Emily Blunt. Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel have provided us with an adaption which stays fairly true to the original story, although there are some characters and elements missing. TGOTT centres on protagonist Rachel, (played by Louisa Lytton during my show), an unemployed alcoholic, still not over the breakdown of her marriage. Ex-husband Tom (Jason Merrells) has moved on; he's remarried Anna and they have a daughter together. Rachel spies on Tom and Anna each day, from the train she still takes to her non-job. Here, she also fixates on another couple who appear the picture of happiness - apart from one unusual occurrence she sees. Soon after, it's reported that Megan, from said mystery couple, has gone missing. Rachel finds herself plunged into the police investigation, as it changes from missing person to murder - with her credibility as a witness constantly called into question due to her erratic lifestyle. Can you work out whodunnit before the end? Whilst I enjoyed this show - performances were strong in the main - there were some scenes which felt slightly stilted, and some injections of humour which seemed misplaced given the subject matter. Staging was minimalist but clever, although I feel will be more impressive the further back you sit (I was on 4th row). I also noted a lack of mics, which made some of the dialogue tricky to pick up at times. Overall, I'd still recommend giving this show a watch, although it falls short of being a
