The countermovement jump. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The CMJ is extremely helpful in evaluating athletes for many reasons. We can look at how athletes are performing in specific phases of the jump such as: The unweighting, braking, propulsive, flight, and landing phases. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ We are able to tell whether athletes are more elastic or on the stiffer side. In my opinion, the CMJ is helpful to not change an athlete much, but more so to sharpen the blade with what they have and maximizing the time in which they look to produce force. In this video alone, you can see each athlete utilizing the SSC and producing force a little bit differently. That’s the real piece of the puzzle. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ It all starts with the athletes ability to effectively unweight. The more an athlete can unweight, the more potential for downward / braking momentum. We then work into the braking phase which we can see how well an athlete can put force into the ground to put the brakes on. With more momentum, more braking force, we are able to effectively utilize the SSC (stretch-shortening cycle.) ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The braking phase will set up force at minimum displacement, which will then set athletes up to produce more force earlier in the propulsive phase. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ We can get a ton of return-to-play feedback in the CMJ as well, such as asymmetries in each phase of the CMJ. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ I highly value power metrics when evaluation my baseball athletes. Understanding P=FV (power = force x velocity) we can dive into each piece of the equation and adjust programming based on deficiencies that are stalling power numbers from increasing. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Are you going to add accommodating resistance to challenge the propulsive phase in a squat? Or to over-speed the eccentric phase to work on an athletes ability to unweight / yield? Are we looking for an increase in stiffness or elasticity?
