@pbsnews: President-elect Donald Trump announced Friday that Dr. Marty Makary is his pick to lead the Food and Drug Administration. “He will work under the leadership of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to, among other things, properly evaluate harmful chemicals poisoning our Nation's food supply and drugs and biologics being given to our Nation's youth, so that we can finally address the Childhood Chronic Disease Epidemic,” Trump said in a statement Friday. Founded in 1906, the FDA is responsible for ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs and vaccines, medical devices and biological products, as well as the safety of cosmetics, products that emit radiation and the country’s food supply. The FDA also regulates tobacco products and infant formula. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Makary opposed vaccine mandates and other public health precautions instituted at the time, like masking. Makary is a surgeon and professor at Johns Hopkins University, and has authored books and articles in which he denounced the use of pesticides in food production and the overprescription of drugs. Makary will work under Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for health secretary who shares similar beliefs.
