Details 👇🏼 OKAY so this was my second time backpacking this loop!! Last fall my girl friends and I did this for the first time and I loved it so much I HAD to bring Sentry!!! The trail basically circumnavigates Half Dome- which is literally so cool bc who knew Half Dome looks SO WILDLY different from different angles. It starts on the Valley floor and climbs all the way up through Tuolumne (passing some of the best viewpoints along the way), and ends in a loop, right back where you started. The permits for this one aren’t super popular, likely because it begins with the steepest climb out of the valley, which makes this a great last minute trip for those of us who are terrible planners!!! OKOK so details: Permits: mirror lake to snow creek (on rec.gov) Our route: -Ascend snow creek trail -camp near Mt. Watkins -hike to Olmsted point and on to Tenaya Lake -start up clouds rest trial at Tenaya -camp near clouds rest -sunrise on clouds rest!!! -hike down clouds rest towards the JMT -pass little Yosemite campground -pick up the Mist trail & descend to Happy Isle parking Totals: 36.5 miles 9,850 elevation gain WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENT: We did this trail in 3 days due to time constraints, but this would be a much more chill route if you did it in 4!! I also DO NOT RECOMMEND this in the middle of summer! It was so so so hot and not a lot of shade to escape the heat from (esp day 1) Optional 4 day itinerary (camp spots) -night one: Upper Snow Creek -night 2: May Lake -night 3: near clouds rest (you cannot camp ON TOP) Please be sure to do your research on which water sources are running and plan accordingly!!
