@pbsnews: An ingredient found in many over-the-counter cough and cold medicines is ineffective and should be removed, according to a Food and Drug Administration proposal. Phenylephrine is an ingredient in versions of popular cold medicines, including NyQuil, Benadryl and Sudafed. While phenylephrine has not been deemed unsafe, the FDA is proposing to remove the ingredient because it's ineffective when it's taken as a pill or syrup. Phenylephrine can work when administered in a nasal spray. To help us understand the FDA's proposal, Stephanie Sy interviewed Randy Hatton. He's a professor at the University of Florida's College of Pharmacy who has been raising awareness about this issue for two decades. #pbsnewshour #pbsnews #newshour #fda #cold #coldseason #fluseason #coldmedicine #medicine #healthcare #NyQuil #pharmacy #flu
