The conservatives have been fed a constant diet of fear, crime, gloom and doom for almost 50 years. They are genuinely terrified. Hard to be analytic when you are scared. Rep leaders know that.

A few years ago I read a study concerning farmers who lost something like 20 IQ points from harvest to harvest and their decisions became more conservative as the year continued. Seems similar.
