close...but should right side of shingle in valley and do cutting on edge of house where should also be a starter shingle.

Winds must not be that high up there, here in Florida drip edge nailed every 4”, bull on drip edge, tear off down to the plywood, nail decking every 6”, cap nails in underlayment not staples

shingle roofer for 18yrs, commercial roofer 14yrs...Never seen a California cut NOT leak eventually. Open, Closed, Woven valleys are manufacturer recommendations 🤔🤔🤔

No wind row, why wouldn't you leave square edge in valley and cut gable side. Take chance poking hole in valley.
