As we approach the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I’ve been reflecting a lot and feeling it deeply. I’ve had the privilege of speaking in several different pieces about the storm and its aftermath, and today I sat down with Louisiana Public Broadcasting to talk about how far we’ve come in weather technology since those days. You can catch that segment on LPB on August 29. I was a true Katrina kid. I was just 11 years old when Katrina made landfall. But as my mom and I talked about yesterday, New Orleans wasn’t just where we lived. It was home. We spent only spent 6 months in Houston, and I cried almost every day. I wanted to be back. I remember listening to Harry Connick Jr.’s “City Beneath the Sea” on repeat during those long drives between Houston and New Orleans. Our house had five feet of floodwater. And we didn’t move back into my childhood home until 2007. I was as obsessed with weather then as I am today. My teachers and friends still remember me “informing” everyone that the storm would hit Louisiana well before most of the city got the news. I was glued to local weather forums, studying the models like my life depended on it. Not much has changed. There’s so much PTSD that still comes up when talking about the storm that changed everything. There’s life before Katrina and life after Katrina. A line that fades with time but never really disappears. And yet, as painful as it all still feels, I’m also reminded of how much progress we’ve made. As a community. As a city. As individuals. We have so much more work to do, but I love this place with everything I’ve got. And I’ll never stop wanting better for it.⚜️
