These majestic creatures were hunted for sport and their bones, which were used in traditional medicine. Habitat loss and hunting led to the extinction of the Barbary lion in the wild. The last wild Barbary lion was killed in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco in 1942. Efforts to preserve the Barbary lion in captivity continued for some time, but by the 1940s, it was considered extinct in the wild. The last known Barbary lion in captivity died in 1927, though some believe a few may have survived in zoos for a while longer. In recent years, there has been interest in “reviving” the Barbary lion through selective breeding programs, using lions with physical traits similar to the original Barbary lions, though this is a controversial topic.
