Was it in the Silmarillion, that mentioned that Gandalf appeared as an Elf in the 2nd age, and befriended Glorfindel? Their appearance as old men wizards wasn't until the 3rd age, correct?

There are scenes in the movie that showed Gandalf was not just a wizard. To Bilbo, he filled up his whole room with a strange dark aura and said ‘Do not assume me to be a conjurer of some cheap tricks

tolkien being a word guy likely used wizard in an older sense. not "guy who does magic" but in "a guy who uses wisdom." see -ard as a suffix.
