My son needed blood drawn. He is a know the facts guy, who loves anatomy, so I explained in detail how they draw blood. Once he knew what was going to happen he watched it and didn’t cry.

My 1yo had to have blood drawn after the LONGEST finger stick. I just held him and told him he was so brave over and over. He doesn’t get what it means but I want to instill this in him from the start

From the time I was three till I was six, I had to get monthly blood tests done. The phlebotomist sat me down and said it was scary but I had to get it done to help

I had ear problems as a child which resulted in lots of labs, tests and surgeries. My mom was a nurse. At one point as tech said “it won’t hurt” and my mom immediately replied “don’t lie to her.

My kiddo is an oncology patient and we got this little gadget called Buzzy (on Amazon) and it’s been a lifesaver! It buzzes & interrupts the pain signals & distracts kiddo so they don’t feel the stick

we're also very big on acknowledging fear/unease in moments that aren't fun like bloodwork or even at the dentist. We tell little one it's okay to have some big feelings, ee can talk through them and work together through that very not fun moment he has to go through

Former phlebotomist, I always ALWAYS planned on taking twice or three times as long for kids of a certain age. Always wanted them to do it themselves versus having to be held. Better in Long run.

while I too subscribe to the "we have to do things scared" mindset, I will say as a nurse most parents, and patients, do not. Kudos to phlebot for the pivot!

as a person who is okay with needles etc, have the nurse/whoever tell and explain what they are doing! it has helped me a lot to know when and what they are doing, oh also im in my 20s :) still works
