On my most recent ER trip, I needed an ultrasound of my abdomen. I was waiting in my room for transport to come get me and bring me to the imaging center. A lovely woman came in and noticed Lucky who was sitting on the end of the bed. I could see her visibly tense up, and suck in her breath. I waited for a second to watch her reaction, and I asked her “are you afraid of dogs?”. She nodded vigorously, and still hadn’t moved from the door. I put my hand on Luckys back, started petting him, and I said “I understand. This is Lucky. He is my mobility service dog, he is 9.5 years old. He is a mix of several breeds. He loves to eat string cheese, and play frisbee.” She kept looking at me. I said “he has been working as a service dog for over 6 years, and can you believe he’s been on an airplane 40 times?”. She began to walk past Lucky to the back of my bed, keeping her eyes on him. I said “he is a really good dog. He loves his ears and neck scratches.” I could see her start to calm down and believe my reassurance. She began to push me to my ultrasound. I showed her how I pet him, and how he ignores everyone we went past, and how calm he is, I also listed off a few of his cooler tasks. When we got to the room, she scanned my band, which required her to pass Lucky again. She kept her eyes on him, but she seemed more relaxed. I said “if you want to pet him, you’re welcome to. He’s probably the best dog you’ll ever meet”. She shook her head, and said “I’ve been attacked”, but I could tell she was interested. I said “I promise it’s okay, he’s a really good dog. You can pet his back or his ears”. She reached forward and pet him. Lucky turned his head toward her and she kinda jumped back, but on her own she came back and pet him. She left with a huge smile, saying “thank you”. Sometimes, this is how we have to teach the public. Coming at her with aggression and telling her to “get over it”, is not an effective way to help someone understand service dogs. I don’t know if she had been attacked by other service dogs, or just dogs in her personal life, but it didn’t matter. A little compassion and understanding goes a long way ❤️ • #servicedoghandler #servicedog #emergencyroom #mutt #servicedoglife #mobilityservicedog
