Kebbi Schoolgirls’ Abduction: Gov Idris to Military — Who Ordered Withdrawal of Troops Before the Attack? Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has demanded a full-scale investigation into the sudden withdrawal of military personnel from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, less than an hour before terrorists abducted several students. The governor raised the concern when he received the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who relocated to Kebbi State on the orders of President Bola Tinubu. Idris said the state government had earlier received intelligence about a possible attack and immediately convened a security meeting to strengthen protection around vulnerable communities and schools. “As a responsive government, when we received intelligence on a possible attack, we summoned a security meeting. The security agencies assured us that all was well and that personnel would be mobilised to the school.” He said. He explained that although military personnel were deployed, they inexplicably withdrew around 3am, just 45 minutes before the terrorists struck at about 3:45am. “The military was deployed, but they later withdrew by 3am and by 3:45am, the incident happened,” Idris said. Describing the development as deeply troubling, the governor said several critical questions must be answered. “Who authorised the military to withdraw? How did security personnel pull out at such a critical time? That is our concern,” he stressed. Idris noted that the state has formally requested a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal and identify the officer or authority that issued the directive. “We have asked the military to investigate and identify who gave that order,” he added. According to Matawalle, fresh intelligence by security agencies indicates that the abducted schoolgirls may soon regain their freedom. “The intelligence we have at hand shows that we are very close to those children,” he assured.
