@aaronnavit: Growing up Sarawakian, I have heard of Universiti Malaya (UM) being the pinnacle of academic excellence in Malaysia—a place where dreams take root and futures are shaped. I was overjoyed when I first received my undergraduate offer letter from UM but getting there seemed impossible given my family financial status and my father was just a labourer. But with all we had, we took a leap of faith and I was on my own during the registration. Flights were too expensive for the entire family. That was the first time I stepped foot in West Malaysia. Long story short, I then was under full scholarship from Yayasan Sime Darby throughout my degree, graduated second upper class and proceded to pursue PhD at the same institution. Never did I imagine that one day, I would walk its halls, pursue my passion for research, and be part of its legacy.
