this movie IS 2025. it’s urgently necessary, and I’m guessing a lot of people probably have the same general idea of it as being a kind of kooky, zany musical, instead of being one of the most powerful works of anti-fascism that I’ve ever seen. It’s so crazy that “All That Jazz” might not be Bob Fosse’s best movie. I can’t believe how political and relevant this movie is to today. Fosse goes so far as to criticize art even as a concept in being anti-fascist, pointing the finger at himself as much as anyone else, and, honestly, he has a point. Everything is subsumed and made irrelevant under fascism. Given how early this is in the portrayal of queer people on cinema, it’s both a landmark achievement in representation as well as a completely brutal recent history of a culture getting wiped out, as all of this stuff did get wiped out in the 30s in Germany—like, historically, the crackdown on this happened basically weeks after the final song in the movie. It is, of course: “Cabaret” (1972), directed by Bob Fosse Highly recommend, but it’s one of the most genuinely upsetting pieces I’ve seen on a deep level.
