Nope I moved here in 91’ it’s completely gone. I use to go downtown several times a week, now I never go. Miss Pioneer Square days 😩

I wish comments could be longer! I moved to Seattle from the Oakland three years ago. Seattle lacks confidence most of all. The pride in being unfriendly also hurts any momentum towards community and culture building.

Seattle culture is confusing. The solution is for transplants to move away ASAP.

I think that Seattle currently is all about the music and food scene. The musicianship in the city is as good as since the grunge era. The foodie community is huge and rivals the best anywhere. 40 yr

tbh I think you're just getting older and you've lost touch with the art/music community. tech bros invented the "seattle freeze" idea bc us natives just don't fuck with them.

As someone who has worked on Amazon campus for the better part of 5 years (as a vendor) , and lived in Seattle for 11,(born in WA) Seattle is a machine that runs to fuel Amazon Executives.

Has the Seattle area always had the social freeze toward newcomers? It seems like without shared ethics people are less willing to mingle.

Lots of metros in the US are going through this, not just Seattle. The growth of the city by transplants has changed it amongst other things. You've just got to get out and rediscover it.

Seattle born, I was at that Seahawks game on Sunday night. The Packers cheering louder then us, then seeing it on highlights that night was the most demoralizing experience of my life.

Belltown is having a big arts resurgence! Galleries opening all over. Basecamp is doing a lot to push that. Suddenly there’s a tattoo shop on almost every corner near me too. But also I agree.

I remember 90s Seattleites saying it was awful then because of Microsoft. The city was amazing to my young mind. I think we age and lose perspective and community. Its still a rad city but we’re old😂

Born and raised in Seattle. I think we still have a culture as a city, but it has definitely changed. Much of what survives is tied to nature: cherry blossoms, salmon runs, parks, water.

Most Amazon workers don’t live in the city. Like some don’t even know the Seattle area. I told one guy I was going to Queen Anne and he had no idea what I was talking about.

We lost it early 2000’s because most the people that can afford to live in the metro area are transitional tech workers that leave every 4 years. Been here 20+ and moved to Columbia city.

It's the transplants as others have said, but also the perfection of writing business plans and getting business loans. Everything is very conformist and safe. Grunge couldn't happen today.

I think you have answered your own question. The corporatization and gentrification has left the city soulless and fake. Everything is unaffordable. The natural beauty of the PNW is the only redeemer.

Agree! The city I moved to 24 years ago is literally unrecognizable. Blocks upon blocks of cheaply built condos selling at jaw-dropping prices; neighborhoods sterilized of their character and charm, iconic businesses lost. But still love PNW!
