Sometimes when they ask it lets them know if they should proceed if you’re further along elsewhere. It’s not as black and white.

I didn’t hear from my recruiter for 3 days after my interview. I emailed him and said I had a job offer at Boeing. Next day I received an offer and a higher salary. Never applied at Boeing.
