Had the same problem with my grans car, but on the other end of the cable. I used a washer nut and bent it to make a makeshift bushing, just to be able to get the car to a mechanic.

I would’ve added a washer and cotter pin to prevent from leaving her stranded in the future but that’s just me being extra cautious 😅

might be overkill, but I'd try to drill a small hole in the end to put a lock pin of some kind to surely secure it, but if it stays it stays.

Nissan cubes have the same issue the washer that holds it in place corrode and fall apart over the years so I just got a rubber ring that's slightly bigger and glued it on

Cut a piece of plastic tubing and slide it over the pin. Then install the linkage. Heat the end to melt it over. Temp fix but works
