I want to point out again that this is constructive criticism, and I really appreciate that this woman is making time to work with her puppy.⁣ ⁣ I understand why the public has seen this way of feeding a dog to be the way to do it because dog trainers all over the world teach it this way.⁣ ⁣ The issue I have with this way of feeding is it focuses on the physical position of the dog and not really the psychological state of the dog.⁣ ⁣ She is asking the puppy to sit, and you can see the puppy in a low state of excitement trying to move towards the food numerous times.⁣ ⁣ By the end, the puppy even moves to the food before she says ok.⁣ ⁣ That teaches the puppy to sit momentarily, be ready/excited, wait for
I want to point out again that this is constructive criticism, and I really appreciate that this woman is making time to work with her puppy.⁣ ⁣ I understand why the public has seen this way of feeding a dog to be the way to do it because dog trainers all over the world teach it this way.⁣ ⁣ The issue I have with this way of feeding is it focuses on the physical position of the dog and not really the psychological state of the dog.⁣ ⁣ She is asking the puppy to sit, and you can see the puppy in a low state of excitement trying to move towards the food numerous times.⁣ ⁣ By the end, the puppy even moves to the food before she says ok.⁣ ⁣ That teaches the puppy to sit momentarily, be ready/excited, wait for "the release," and then move to the food fast.⁣ ⁣ So psychologically, the puppy learns to sit and wait, yes, but also learns to be excited and move towards food to eat.⁣ ⁣ Instead, I would hold the bowl and actually let the puppy try to get the food and realize that being excited and moving towards the food doesn't work.⁣ ⁣ The moment the puppy calmed down and gave some space, I would put the food right at their paws 🐾 and let it eat.⁣ ⁣ This way, the puppy learns that being calm and giving distance is the only way to get food.⁣ ⁣ I've done this with my dogs since puppyhood, and the result is that when I start preparing food, the dogs move away to a certain spot and wait calmly.⁣ ⁣ Then I walk over to them, put food down, and they calmly start to eat without "the release."⁣ ⁣ Food is a BIG deal to dogs, and the state of mind they get fed in is very important to their overall state of mind.⁣ ⁣ I will post some videos today showing exactly how I would do this with a puppy so you are clear on how to do this effectively.⁣ ⁣ Love you, and have an incredible day!
