Wrong. They needed third engine to be legal to fly over the ocean. Now sense ETOPS became a thing, you can cross any pond with only two engines.

It was more to do with the 30 minute ETOPS rule for twin engined aircraft, the third engine got around this until the airbus A300 came into service
