END OF DAYS - Testing the Seven-Foot Tall Satan Beast at #StanWinstonStudio. #EndOfDays, Peter Hyams’ film about an ex-cop (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who faces off with Satan to prevent him from taking a bride and bringing about the prophecies in the Book of Revelations. One of a slate of movies that exploited the paranoia surrounding the coming end of the millennium — was much more somber in tone. Stan Winston Studio designed and executed a full-size Satan beast as a suit and #mechanical head, which was intercut with a computer-animated Satan created by Rhythm & Hues. Joey Orosco #sculpted the beast, working from Crash McCreery’s drawings. The final Satan beast measured seven feet tall and had a twelve-foot wingspan. For several days of filming, at a Catholic church in downtown Los Angeles, John Rosengrant performed inside the suit, while six to nine puppeteers controlled head and wing functions. “The Satan creature was probably the toughest suit I was ever in,” noted Rosengrant, “mainly because of the position my body had to be in to make it work. My arms were outstretched, and my feet were locked together in ski boots, on a little base on a boom arm so that I could be raised and lowered. I looked as if I was being crucified. Then, I had to lean far forward, which put a lot of pressure on my back, because the suit and the head were very heavy. I had to train really long and hard to sustain that kind of pressure on my back. It was also very claustrophobic in this suit. Once it was sealed up, there was no way to breathe, so I had to be fed air from a tube. It was dark in there, too so I couldn’t see a thing until the monitor inside was turned on.” #puppet #puppets #practicaleffects #moviemaking #filmmaking #behindthescenes #arnoldschwarzengegger
