Tips for building up your food stores⬇️ While fresh eats from a summer garden is a great place to start, leaning into food preservation and growing veggies that store well is the ultimate goal for becoming more self-sufficient💪🏼. We live in zone 3/4 Minnesota, so our growing season is SHORT❄️. I’ve had to perfect my food storage strategy to help get us through the long winter months. We finished harvesting in September and here we are, still eating from our food stores 7 months later! I rarely ever go to the grocery now that I have this dialed in 🙌🏼. Here are my best tips: 👩🏻‍🌾Grow things that store well: potatoes, carrots, turnips, rutabagas, winter squash, onions, garlic, shallots 👩🏻‍🌾Grow varieties that are known to store well (not ALL potatoes or carrots will store well!) 👩🏻‍🌾Learn how to cure them properly for long-term storage (I have reels on this from last summer) 👩🏻‍🌾Can, freeze, ferment, or freeze dry anything else that doesn’t store well 👩🏻‍🌾Eat things in the correct order - Start with fresh storage, then frozen and fermented, then canned, and lastly, dehydrated/freeze dried. 👩🏻‍🌾Invest in a deep freezer - You won’t regret it! 👩🏻‍🌾Take inventory at the beginning and end so that you know how much you used and can adjust for the following year. 👩🏻‍🌾Buy anything that’s missing in bulk - Rice, oats, flour, sugar, canned tuna, etc. What am I missing from the list? Let’s keep adding onto it! 💫
