We cut up an old sheet (I think it's cotton, maybe flannel?) into 5x5" squares, I only have to wash them once a week. We also have a bidet so there's never solids on them

No way. We use a bidet and have a basket full of clean washcloths. After single use we put them in dirty bin and wash on sanitize!! There are ways to do this safely.
