How you should lift weights as a runner? What does the latest science say? Studies show that lifting HEAVY or EXPLOSIVELY with lower volume and Lower repetition leads to the best adaptations to enhance running performance! Through this, adaptations that transfer over to running are increases in muscle strength or power and increases in tendon stiffness! To increase muscle strength, we must lift heavy with lower reps! To increase overall power abilities, we should use explosive, low-rep protocols with moderate weights! Lastly, tendons respond to heavy loading! Heavy-loaded strength training has consistently been shown to lead to greater increases in tendon stiffness. Stiffer tendons can store and release more free energy which enhances the running economy. Additionally, a stiffer tendon is more durable and less prone to high strain rates that can lead to tendonitis. As a runner, you should stay far away from the lift-to-failure principle. That way, we avoid unwanted fatigue and soreness that may affect the quality of our future runs. This translates to a maximum of 3-4 sets per exercise with each set consisting of 3-6 reps. Each set occurs around 70-85% of that athlete's 1 rep max. Incorporate various isometrics exercises to go after these adaptations in runners. Heavy isometrics are great for neurological strength adaptations in key running positions and to increase tendon stiffness. Ballistic isometrics are a good stimulus to increase our power or rate of force development ability. And isometrics typically cause less fatigue than dynamic lifting!!!
