Our district has a homeless bus that crosses the whole county and makes sure that homeless students get to their school. It is about an hour late everyday but still a win!

my mom and her younger brothers were often late bc they rarely had a working car, and my grandmother was generally unreliable to wake up with them. my mom always said the school made her feel bad

The perspective needs to be “glad you made it” instead of “you’re late” to encourage them to come and show up. Then build skill and strategy to support them to be on time.

I was late everyday last day. My mama has sleep apnea and my health teacher asked me out loud, to the whole class. That’s when I told him my mom had severe sleep apnea and she couldn’t wear her mask because it didn’t fit and they didn’t have the size she needed. He was taken aback. He never judged me for being late again.
