RIP Abdelmagid Elzubeir 19 💔 “Des Moines teen sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for fatal 2024 stabbing of his brother-DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines teenager was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison Wednesday for stabbing and killing his brother, according to the Polk County Attorney's office. 17-year-old Mohamed Mutaz Elzubeir pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the death of his older brother, Abdelmagid “Majet” Elzubeir, in 2024. Mohamed, who was 16 at the time, said that his brother was screaming at him before Mohamed swung at him with a kitchen knife at the brothers' home in Oakridge Neighborhood, a release stated. In court, Mohamed claimed his older brother had bullied him for years. Mohamed told the court he “had blood on my hands” and was guilty. According to the release, both the prosecution and defense recommended that Mohamed be sentenced to prison. Officials said Mohamed suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 2021 car crash that exacerbated his behavioral problems. He will be sent to the Department of Corrections’ Medical Classification Center in Oakdale to help deal with his issues with impulse control, his mental health and medical needs. Due to Mohamed's age, the court could have chosen deferred judgment or probation. “Mohamed has a long, troubled history of managing his behaviors,” a judge said in court.
