the "life expectancy of 35" thing is mostly because of how many people died in infancy or childhood. If you made it to adulthood you'd probably make it to ~60...

The big problem is campaign finance. It takes a lot of money to get elected, but once you are it is infinitely easy to get the money. Makes it very hard to primary or contest a seat.

Life expectancy of 35 was due to childhood deaths. People lived similarly long 100 years ago (a little shorter) if they made it through childhood.
