Alcohol and other substances provide temporary relief to the individual being one of the few things that give a sense of relief or escape. Alcohol and other substances are the solution to the addict, NOT the problem. However, the more it is chased the less effective it becomes which creates desperation and desire for more. This is the cycle of addiction. This is how things become unmanageable. Pain and consequence are typically the catalyst for people to seek recovery and break prior beliefs that using provided a solution.
