I read the Sun Eater series this summer, and there was an interaction between characters that really stuck with me. Hadrian, the protagonist, is a kind of god-like figure trying to help the human species survive. He’s aligned with the Emperor, the ruling figure in his country. The Emperor has a son, Alexander, who is power-hungry and intent on one day occupying the throne. His thirst for power is immense, and he projects that onto everyone around him. Because Hadrian has supernatural abilities and can do things other mortals cannot, Alexander is deeply skeptical of him. He goes on to conspire against Hadrian to ensure he is not a threat to his future power. Hadrian isn’t a threat at all. His heart doesn’t lust for that. Hadrian tells his friends, “Alexander lusts for power. He has his entire life, and so he cannot imagine that other people may not lust the way he does.” It’s a striking example of projection — being so immersed in your own worldview that you can’t imagine others having different desires, hopes, or motivations. We all do this to some extent. Becoming a conscious person means addressing these projections and seeing how they limit our ability to connect with and love other people. Because that’s ultimately what they do: block our capacity for connection and love. I’m working through this “therapist complex” because I don’t like pre-judging people. I don’t like withholding and defaulting to a comfortable role. It keeps people distant, it doesn’t allow me to shine, and it keeps me small.
