I believe it's called a flex plate for a reason. Flex plates move back and forth. converters balloon. I've seen factory setups with gap. I could be wrong.

don't shim it all the way back. torque converters balloon with rpm. there is a specification for torque converter to pump clearance.

Hold up. Hold up everybody. I'm sure the OP just misspoke, no disrespect. But you do in fact need an 1/8th to 3/16" pullout. Leaving the converter fully engaged into the pump will crack the pump.

Just encountered this, spacer installed slid converter towards plate and nose bottoms in crank spacer before bolt pads hit plate added 1/8” hardened washers to fill gap.

Most of the time 3/16 of pull out of pump anything past 3/16 is what you would add in washers we use drill bits to measure makes it easy to figure out your washer thickness you will need past the 3/16
