@nicolascurciowriter: Don’t ever tell me there’s a single “proper” way to format a feature length screenplay (or i’ll make a rant about you on tiktok) pt 75 #writer #screenwriting #writing #writertok #timotheechalamet
This is one of those things that shouldn’t matter unless you’re in production. Then sure, make it easier on your AD. And as a reader, if the story is dope I can forgive formatting or spelling errors.

It’s never, like, actual screenwriters who double-down on the formatting issue

I was a little surprised when I learned that Batman and Bruce Wayne are often considered different characters in the script even though they’re played by the same actor. I get it but…

I'm a reader as well and if the script is good, and I can view it in my minds eye, I do NOT care. It's actually refreshing in my opinion.

Craftsmanship- in screenwriting or pottery- has always been a game of knowing when to follow insider codes to demonstrate mastery and when to break them to reveal a vision worth noticing.

I saw David Ayer backed you up, too! His script for Training Day is one of the best times I’ve ever had reading a script.

Most AD's will handle this. I did support for Movie Magic Scheduling and I spoke to people constantly merging or differentiating characters because of Director or Producer requests.

😅 Yep, their feathers shall always be ruffled. Rules are meant to be broken if it looks good. Bob Sings is a smoother flow.

Exactly what Josh said. In preproduction, we cut characters, we change names that haven’t been cleared, we change locations, etc. Until then just tell a great story.

I can't imagine a really good script getting rejected because the tabs are misaligned or something.

100% not an issue. As a producer that makes and buys movies, this is OK. ALSO, any good AD will reformat it anyway. It’s not even a formatting issue. There are different ways to show singing. 👍

I MOSTLY agree. But as a reader who's encountered unreadable scripts (try no character names), your final statement could encourage ppl to go wild: "But Nic said handwritten scripts in Haiku is ok."😉

Could we also say it depends on who the writer is? Like, sure, follow basic format rules when starting out but Mangold can write however he wants to. Several "big time" writers have played with format

I'm not a professional (tho went to film school) and this formatting I'd recommend ppl shy away from bc it may be confusing for a reader. But if it's a first draft, it means so much less 🤔🤷♀️
